The former inhabitants of Lochristi all remember, without a doubt : from 1951 until 1988 took place the “Begonia Festival” in the town centre. At end of the 40s and the beginning of the 50s, Lochristi was a major producer of begonia bulbs. Initiated by the then mayor, Jean De Schryver (Family Tree page Ea), flower carpets were created in the town centre from 1951 onwards : the “Begonia Festival” was born. This event took place on the last weekend of August and in 3 days time –saturday, sunday and monday- Lochristi would welcome between 25.000 and 30.000 visitors each year.
Thanks to 250 volunteers, an artistic mini-flower festival was recreated this year and made a reference to the 1978 Begonia Festival theme : “the village”. The floral carpets and models lost none of their splendor.
